Upon arrival, crews were met with heavy fire venting from the first and second floor. Crews stretched and made an aggressive interior attack while additional crews vented the roof and established a water supply. As crews were making good headway on the interior attack with the bulk of the fire knocked down, the occupant of the residence informed command that there was a quantity of very old dynamite stored in a metal milk can in the basement. Due to the uncertainty surrounding the condition of the dynamite and the presence of multiple other hazards capable of providing significant concussive force around the dynamite, the decision was made to pull back and evacuate the area. The blitz fire was left unmanned at the front of the structure, and crews evacuated nearby residences as they pulled back. Crews continued to feed the blitz fire and monitor with Susquehanna County Drone while awaiting the Bomb squad. Once the Bomb squad arrived, crews moved back into the scene and finished extinguishing the fire. An excellent job was done by all during the duration of this call; Elk Lake Volunteer Fire Company Command made smart decisions with the safety of everyone in mind, Susquehanna County 911 handled a routine fire that turned into a rapidly changing large event flawlessly, Susquehanna County EMA and Dimock Twp EMA provided immense support, and all mutual aid companies worked together seamlessly to bring the community the safest outcome possible.
